The E.D.O.L. project is a 3 year, EU Grundtvig 2 funded project which aims to introduce older people to computing. It uses an online community, based around the TikiWiki content management system, to teach IT and English language skills to people over the age of fifty.
The project consists of nine partner organisations in seven European countries: Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.
The E.D.O.L. Tiki allows students to use their recently acquired IT skills to communicate with one another across Europe and to jointly undertake projects on the website. A project called 'When I was Young' has proved popular with students creating numerous webpages about their childhoods in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The different memories that people had of growing up and the way that these experiences differed from country to country has given rise to some fascinating insights about life in Europe.
Students are also given the opportunity to take part in trans-national meetings, each held in a different partner country. Trans-national meetings have already taken place in Italy, Denmark, Belgium and Spain with visits to The Netherlands and Ireland planned. Such visits enables face-to-face meetings between the members of the online community and encourages students to improve their IT skills so that they can communicate with their new friends when back home.
The UK has two E.D.O.L. student groups, both of which are based in Norfolk. The Forum Trust led group is based in Mulbarton while another student group is led by the Vauxhall Centre in Norwich.
